Digitals / Polaroid Guide

Learn how to take professional digitals that meet agency standards. These simple, unretouched photos are the industry standard for model evaluation.

Digitals (also called polaroids or snapshots) are simple, unretouched photographs that show agencies and clients exactly what you look like. Unlike professional portfolio shots, digitals are meant to be raw and honest — no heavy editing, no professional lighting setups, no elaborate styling. They are the most important tool in a model's arsenal.

Camera & Setup

  • Use a high-quality smartphone or DSLR camera
  • Shoot at eye level with the camera on a tripod or stable surface
  • Use portrait orientation for full-length and close-up shots
  • Ensure the resolution is at least 1200px wide
  • Shoot in RAW or highest quality JPEG setting

Lighting

  • Natural daylight is ideal — shoot near a large window
  • Avoid harsh direct sunlight that creates strong shadows
  • Overcast days provide the most flattering, even light
  • If indoors, face the light source directly
  • No flash — it flattens features and creates unflattering shadows

Background

  • Use a plain white or light grey wall
  • Ensure the background is clean and uncluttered
  • No patterns, artwork, or distracting elements
  • Stand at least 2 feet away from the wall to avoid harsh shadows
  • The background should be evenly lit

Wardrobe & Styling

  • Wear form-fitting, simple clothing — solid colors only
  • Women: fitted jeans/leggings + simple top or bodysuit
  • Men: fitted jeans + plain white/black t-shirt
  • No logos, patterns, or bold prints
  • Minimal jewelry — remove watches and large accessories
  • Hair should be clean and natural — no elaborate styling
  • Minimal or no makeup — agencies want to see your natural features
